Goeh tops Kuklina to capture Iowa RBO

Thirty-six players participated in the RBO section of 68th Iowa Open held August 26-27, 2023, at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines, Iowa. Joseph Goeh defeated Mariia Kuklina in the final round of the of this five-round Swiss System tournament to finish 5-0. It was Kuklina’s first tournament. Five players Kuklina, Bode Balk, Daniel Houts, Tejas Koripella, and David Dee tied for second place with 4 points each. John Winters and Ashrith Chekuri finished with 3.5 points.
Chess continues to thrive in Iowa. Nine of the 36 entries, a quarter, of the players, competed in their first chess tournament. The following players played in their first chess event, Kuklina, Balk, Deed, Jacob Krafcisin, Jacob Kotalik, Carter Bell, Rachel Dee, Abhinav Koppuravuri, and Tanav Kuruganti.
