2018 Lee County Fair Chess Tournament

Nick Hantzeas from Ft Madison,IA won with 4 wins at the 2018 Aulden VanWinkle Chess Tournament was held on July 8, 2018, at the Lee County Fair in Donellson, IA.

Chess Director Doug Campbell of Carthage, IL stands behind Doc VanWinkle of Burlington, IA, while he hands the 2018 Lee County Chess Champion, Nick Hantzeas of Ft' Madison, IA, the hand crafted Aulden VanWinkle Traveling Trophy Clock, with 2017 Chess Champion, Jesse VanWinkle of Winterset, IA, standing behind him.


Malachi Campbell from Carthage, IL took 1st place medal and James Hunold of Donellson, IA took the 2nd place medal in the youth section of the Lee Co Fair's Tournament.


Hantzeas beat Jesse VanWinkle of Winterset, IA, the 2017 Champion, in the 4th round take home the Aulden VanWinkle Traveling Trophy, which was crafted by Doc VanWinkle, the son of Aulden Van Winkle, who the tournament is named after.


Aulden VanWinkle was a long time supporter of the Lee County Fair and was one of the original founder of the long running tournament. A moment of silence was observed for another original founder and the original director, Carl Dunn, who passed away last year.


The Lee County Fair Tournament is a non-rated G/30 annual event at the Lee County Fair Tournament. The tournament is sponsored by the VanWinkle Family and the Tri-State Chess Club. Doug Campbell directed the tournament.


The Tri-State Chess Club meets every Monday, at the HyVee Deli, in Keokuk, IA.
