Noble appointed editor; Volz appointed webmaster

The Iowa State Chess Association Board of Directors has voted to appoint Cassidy "Cub" Noble as En Passant Editor and Mike Volz as webmaster.

Mike Volz

Mike Volz, from Waterloo, has been playing tournament chess for about 20 years. He has worked as a software engineer for 12 years. He enjoys spending time with his family (which includes three daughters), exercising, music and computer games.

Volz fills a position left open as I announced my decision late last year to step down due to work commitments after serving as webmaster since April 2016.

Cassidy "Cub" Noble, an accountant from Cedar Falls, has been playing tournament chess since he was a sophomore at Ankeny High School. During college he took a break from chess to focus on his studies, but returned to playing not too long after. A highlight for Noble was playing in the 2018 Iowa Closed.

"I played in the 2018 Iowa Closed tournament scoring a blazing 0.5 / 5. It was a lot of work (even if the results don’t show it), but it was a lot of fun," Noble said. "During the pandemic, I wrote a newsletter for the Cedar Falls chess community. That newsletter garnered some attention, and I was informed there was a void as the En Passant Editor. I decided to take a shot at it and here we are!"

The Iowa State Chess Association is fortunate to add such dedicated chess players to our staff. Please join us in welcoming Cub Noble as En Passant Editor and Mike Volz as webmaster!
