A New Website
By Bethany Carson

The IASCA board is pleased to announce our new, re-designed website!  We would also like to thank outgoing webmaster Rex Gray for the great work he did over the past year building and maintaining our previous website, and for his invaluable assistance in transitioning to this new website.

Pay Membership Dues Online

  • You can now join the IASCA or renew your IASCA membership online at our Join page.

Online Tournament Registration

  • Tournament organizers and players  may use our new Online Registration.  This is a courtesy service, and there are no processing fees.  ***EDIT*** It does appear the customary Paypal sales fee applies.

A player fills out the registration form and pays via Paypal or credit card of choice.  Payment is sent directly to the organizer's Paypal account.  The organizer is responsible for maintaining a Google Docs spreadsheet to list registrants, if desired.

You can see a registration form & embedded registration list at the Wellsburg Open TLA.

Organizers may choose to use IASCA's online registration when submitting TLAs.  If your tournament announcement is already listed, email iowachessassociation@gmail.com to have online registration added.

Submitting News and Tournaments

  • Submit news articles via our Submit News form.  Longer news articles and photos should be emailed to the webmaster.

  • Submit TLAs at the Submit Tournament form.  Consider emailing one photo of the event location or last year's tournament to display with the TLA.

The Juicy Details

Rex Gray announced to the board in early March that he was stepping down as webmaster and recommended me as his replacement.

I told Eric via email and later everyone at the board meeting that it would be better to find a programmer.  But subsequently, exchanging emails with Rex about my concerns with building a platform-based website and learning how much it cost to privately fund the old website changed my perception of the situation.

So, I designed a skeletal version of this website with Wix and sent it to the Board with my proposals.  After considering other options, they voted in favor.  Further improvements were made, and the board unanimously voted on April 21st to take the website live.

Thanks goes to Ron Numri for suggesting and Mark Capron for helping set up the ecommerce functions, to Mark Capron for sending PDFs of old En Passants, to Robert Keating and Rex Gray for reviewing/editing the new webmaster guidelines, to Eric Vigil, Bill Broich, and James Hodina for their feedback on various aspects of the site, and to Rex Gray for his encouragement, expert advice on implementation, and many ideas for improvement.

Thank you to Daniel Carson for agreeing to be assistant webmaster.  Daniel, who originally introduced me to the Wix platform, will assist in making sure TLAs and news items are posted in a timely manner.

What You Can Do

New content is what keeps a website interesting.  Please consider submitting articles about chess and photos from tournaments you attend.  Suggestions for continued website improvement would also be appreciated.  Thank you!
