News Release for the 2016 Keokuk Spring Tournament

The Tri-State Chess Club's Spring Chess Tournament, held on April 30, 2016, at the Keokuk Christian Academy was successful with 25 players entering in the two section tournament. There were chess players from Quincy, Burlington, Rock Island, Peoria, Iowa City, and other tri-state cities.

 

The nonrated section was able to become a rated tournament; the Tri-State Chess Club was able to sponsor the player's United States Chess Association memberships. This section became a U1200 Tournament and played a 5 round, 30 minute tournament.

 

The winners of the U1200 Tournament were Joseph Vigil of Iowa City winning first place.  Jewels Alvis of Keokuk won second place. Jacob Vigil of Iowa City won third place.

 

The open section was a 4 round, 60 minute tournament with Joseph Willett of Rock Island winning first place, Robert Reynolds of Burlington won second place. Timothy Gregory of Quincy on third place.

 

Doug Campbell of Elvaston directed the tournament. Arnie Gatton of Keokuk was the assistant director. Campbell is the Keokuk Christian Academy Chess Coach. Both Campbell and Gatton are directors for the Tri-State Chess Club. Eric Vigil of Iowa City is the President of the Iowa Chess Association was an advisor for the tournament.

 

The tournament was hosted by the Keokuk Christian Academy and the Tri-State Chess Club. The Tri-State Chess Club meets Mondays at the Keokuk Hy-Vee Deli at 6pm and is open to the public and all chess players.
